Mission
The Hillside Design Lab focuses on the design of appropriate foundation and
structural systems within a hillside context. The Lab also provides the
opportunity for architecture students to explore the various issues and
challenges one faces when dealing with hillside conditions.
The intent of hillside projects involves introducing architecture students
to consultants within the profession. The Hillside Design Lab educates
students that complex and difficult situations require consultation between
various professions to resolve the site and project conditions for building
suitable structures.
History
In the Spring of 1997, the School received an endowment from Bob Wong, the
executive officer of Geolabs-Hawaii, an international geo-technical and
geo-environmental consulting firm, to establish the Geolabs-Hawaii
Hillside Design Laboratory. The endowment provides financial support
towards research into hillside design for settlements especially in the
Asia Pacific region.
Concentrating on the integration of engineering and architecture, the
Hillside Design lab represents the efforts by the School to educate
architecture students about the importance of resolving site problems.
This integration incorporates working with engineers and consultants in
a studio setting.
The funding for the Lab includes support for students to study hillside
design in the Asia Pacific area at leading universities within the
region. In addition, the Lab provides grants for visiting scholars from
the Asia Pacific region to teach and conduct research.
In the fall of 2004, The School of Architecture received a proposal
from a group of graduate students who wished to take on the
responsibility for the administration and direction of the Hillside
Design Lab. In the spring of 2005, The Geolabs-Hawaii Hillside
Design Laboratory became a graduate lead initiative. The HDL presents
an excellent opportunity for the University of Hawaii to assume the
role of a leader in the area of hillside design. Furthermore, the HDL
is a perfect arena for our graduate level students to apply their
abilities and distinguish themselves, and our program, both
academically and professionally.
